A decade ago KamaG5, then known as KAMA or Kamikaze, was riding high as Toronto’s top indie hip hop artist. Not only was he a rapper, he was a hip hop mogul in the making. He was building a record company, developing a film business, and mentoring other hip hop artists.
KamaG5 has had a long list of hit indie singles, including “Today,” whose music video aired on Canada’s Much Music and Much Vibe; “Kamillion,” which was placed on heavy rotation on urban commercial radio stations across Canada in late 2002; “Messin’ Wit Me”; and “Independence Day.” The song “Kama’s World” featured American hip-hop legend Doug E. Fresh became a commercial hit across Canada.
Things changed drastically one day in May of 2014 when Ez-Mak’s CEO Kama was rear ended by an 18-wheeler; speeding at more than 140 km an hour. “I was in the middle of filming a movie called YANK. I had just returned to Toronto from Jamaica. I had a flight to catch that same day when Bang, out of nowhere.. that’s all I heard,” He recalls about that fateful day. “The next thing I woke up in the hospital, I suffered a brain injury, had a major concussion, and I had been in a coma.” It’s taken Kama nearly three and a half years to recover, and still undergoing rehabilitation.
A legal battle later ensued in 2015 between Kama, Toronto’s chief of police, and the city’s mayor. As a community activist, Kama revealed, “I walked through the fire and survived. My eyes are wide open now. I came through smarter and more artistically inclined. I love my music, and business more than ever before. I am looking to take everything to a higher degree.”
Originally EZAKI MAK INCORPORATED was founded in 1999, and later was abbreviated into Ez-Mak Records & Entertainment. As far as his own music, KamaG5 dropped a mixtape in 2016 titled “Hot Ras.” When asked about his future plans, he responds… “Next I’m dropping ‘DNA- Dem Niggaz Active,’ a mixtape compilation with the whole roster, and some local talent who have worked with me in my studio on different projects i.e. Jaz & YMob. KAMA continues to support, and work with his favourite artist and nephew – Heartless G. His new movement Riders 1st. They have collaborations on music, and both have their own novels releasing. Then he has the ‘MR. YYZ’ album coming in the near future.”
Among the other projects KAMA
with his team are hard at work on “YANK / You Ain’t No Killa,” a reality series. “It’s a first of it’s kind web series shot in Toronto, Jamaica, and Trinidad. Episode One is available now at www.YankSeries.com or on YouTube / EZMAKTV. It is meant to show disadvantaged youth the harsh realities of being a gangster, and that it’s not what it’s all built up to be,” says KAMA. YANK features real-life, infamous street legends and stars. Some famous faces such as Louie “OX”
Rankin, Bang’em Smurf, SD, Gino Marley, and Kama Ez-Mak. The series went viral following the murder of two of the main characters in Trinidad.
KAMA is also rebuilding his non-profit organization, Hood Net Academy. Hood Net rewards local children who stay in school, and those who are underprivileged & rehabilitating. By teaching the inner workings of a recording studio and the entertainment business.
KamaG5 is ready for bigger and better things ahead, and he’s definitely not calling this phase a comeback. “Because it’s not a return,” he says. “I was interrupted, and this isn’t something I do, it’s who I am. I have unfinished business and goals that I set. I am wiser, smarter, and much different after all my experience. I’m looking forward to 2018, because I feel I am closer to the best version of me ever. I have a strong and stable team now – it’s not just me. I envision greatness and success for all.” It’s the return of the Mak Boss Drippin in Mak Sause I learn from all my L’s so I never ever lost.
